Creative CloudEffects of Two Different Inhaler Aerosols on Lung Mechanics in Patients with Asthma.
We compared the effects of two different inhaler aerosol inhalations on the fractional area of the exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and on the fractional ventilation (FeVent) of the lungs in patients with asthma. This study was conducted with 21 patients with asthma who were divided into two groups: 13 patients received a Fluticasone propionate/salmeterol 50/50 (FP/S) dry-powder inhaler and eight patients received a budesonide/formoterol (B/F) dry-powder inhaler. Lung mechanics were measured at baseline and 1, 6, and 24 hours after each inhalation. The FeNO and FeVent were significantly higher in the FP/S group than the B/F group at baseline. The differences in the FeNO between the two groups were significantly smaller at 6 and 24 hours after inhalation. The FeVent was significantly increased in the B/F group at 1 and 6 hours after inhalation. The percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1%) and FEV1/forced vital capacity in the FP/S group was significantly higher than that in the B/F group at 6 and 24 hours after inhalation. The difference in the ratio of the FEV1% and the FeVent between the two groups was significant at 1 hour after inhalation. We demonstrated that the FP/S dry-powder inhaler had a more favorable effect on lung mechanics than the B/F dry-powder inhaler.
